The Hunter made a shift several years ago to focus attention beyond collecting, preserving and interpreting objects to become a more visitor-centered museum. While the collection remains at the core of our organization, we intend to put more of an emphasis on people.
We’ve made progress in the last six years, but there is more work to be done. The staff at the Hunter has been posting blogs for a little more than a year. We hope to use the blog (and some of our other interactive tools) to provide more insight about the Hunter and to have a dialogue with our audience.
In reviewing the existing blogs, I think we have been fairly successful in giving readers a chance to learn more about the staff, exhibitions, programs, events and to get a glimpse behind the scenes. However, as far as a dialogue is concerned, well, not so much.
We do know that digital media is working in a number of areas. Our e-newsletter list continues to grow and the “Chatt-up” program publicized through Twitter drew a great crowd. Beautiful images of the Hunter are all over Flickr, our Guide-by-Cell tours are very popular and the visitor comments in the gallery are both plentiful and thoughtful. Finally, the Art in Public Places project saw thousands cast their vote for the sculptures they wanted to see added to the Museum’s collection.
So if you have a moment, peruse a blog or two and let us know what you think. If we need to make changes to make it easier to do so, just let us know. If you have a more general question, comment or suggestion, go to the “about” section on the home page, click on “contact” and roll over one of our names for an email address.
We hope to hear from you soon.
