East Wing: Impressionism & City Scenes (Gallery 15)
Everett Shinn was passionately interested in the theater; he even built a small stage within his studio to further his involvement. He often painted scenes from the theater, particularly vaudeville. Here an actress, clad in a costume that was provocative by early twentieth century standards, stands in front of a mirror. She is surrounded by scattered clothing that heightens the sexual feel of the scene. Her attire is in stark contrast to the long black dress, high white collar, and plumed hat of the other woman reflected in the mirror.
