Analysis

Perhaps the best known American women painter of the 19^th century, Mary Cassatt studied extensively in Paris and worked closely with Edgar Degas. It was very unusual at the time for a woman artist to gain recognition. Further, she was the only American artist, male or female, to exhibit with the French Impressionists. She is best known for her theme of mother and child, seen here in a variant of a nurse and her charge.
