Prior to the formation of the Hudson River School, Thomas Doughty was one of the first artists to paint the American landscape. As in this piece, his paintings often focus on tranquil bodies of water and poetic, subdued landscapes in comparison to the larger scale Western mountain scenes created by later artists.
