East Wing: Abstract Expressionism (Gallery 18)
David Park was a founder of the "California figurative painters," a group of San Francisco Bay Area artists who, in the mid-1950s to mid-1960s, retained vaguely realistic imagery in their work. Prior to this, he had painted abstractions. Both tendencies are seen in this painting which blurs the separation between the greatly simplified figures and the broadly painted background.
