Hunter Museum of American Art

Interpreting Art (IA) is the name of our after school class for high school teenagers sponsored by the Hunter Teen Advisory Council (HTAC) and in partnership with the Hamilton County Department of Education. Students explore a different arts-related theme each semester through hands-on activities, research, and creative programming. IA qualifies as a Fine Arts credit for HCDE students who can apply this one (1) credit toward graduation requirements or as an elective. See your guidance counselor for details.

IA will meet this fall on selected Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. during the Fall 2009 semester. Students who do not attend an HCDE school are also encouraged to apply.

Past Classes:

The fall 2008 IA class took a closer look at Art, Advertising, and Propaganda. Fall 2008 proved to be an election year for the history books and IA focused their attention on the candidates and how they used art, advertising, and propaganda in their campaigns. The class was visited by Senator Andy Berke and Clay Bennett, Editorial Cartoonist from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, to discuss political issues and art.

The spring 2008 teen program was a great success. We premiered the documentary "Up and Out in Chattanooga: A Film About Graffiti in our City" on May 8th at the Hunter Museum. Hundreds of hours of footage from tags on signposts to interviews with city officials were collected by our teens to produce the film.
